Numbers of births

Birth rate or gross birth rate is the number of births of one population per thousand inhabitants in a year.

It can be calculated as Tn = (N / P) * 1000

Where Tn represents the birth rate, N represents the number of births occurring in a year and P represents the total population.

Generally, in Colombia during 2016, 479,141 births were reported nationally, of which 51% are men and 48.6% are women. While in 2015, 659,255 births were reported in the country, of which 51.4% were men and 48.6% were women.

The total represents the number of births in each of the departments, with a total of 479,141 births according to the mothers' age, and the proportion represents the% of births by each department over 100%.

The table above shows the total number of births according to the mother's age at the national level during 2016 in Colombia. Here it is observed that the highest proportion of this index occurs in women between 20 and 24 years of age with 139,309 births, which represents 29.1% of the total; and the lowest proportion occurs in women between 50 and 54 years of age, with 111 births representing a rather insignificant percentage of births in Colombia during 2015.

Finally, the last table shows the number of births in 2016 in the department where the mother lives. The total represents the number of births in each of the departments, with a total of 479,141 of births per department over 100%.

The above table shows that the capital of the country, Bogotá, and departments such as Antioquia and Valle del Cauca represent 35.5% of total births, while Vaupés, Guainía and the Archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia represent only 0, 3%, of the total births of the country.

According to the information presented above, it is important to take into account that in Colombia throughout the year 2015 more men were born than women, despite the fact that the percentage difference between births of genera is only 2%.
